As a paying customer, Simon could do as he pleased.

Everything was so different now, so different than it had been back when they were dating. That seemed like forever ago. Mercedes couldn’t even remember what she’d seen in Simon in the first place. He was an old man – at least, he was older than she was – though his body didn’t show it. When they’d been together like that, like an almost-real couple, he’d been sophisticated. He’d been suave. He’d reminded her of Cary Grant – yes, that’s why she’d fallen for him back in those days, and fallen so hard she didn’t even care that he was married to some old broad named Florence.

‘Remind me: when’s the wedding?’ Simon sat right smack in the middle of her loveseat, one leg crossed over the other. What a smug bastard he’d become since they’d broken up.

‘Fuck off,’ Mercedes replied. She wasn’t getting into this with him. Not now, not ever.

Simon didn’t react to the insult. ‘Coming up pretty soon, isn’t it?’ He nodded in the direction of the goddamn video game console Anwar had hooked up to her TV. ‘Moving his stuff in already, I see. What’s this guy’s name again? Anwar bin Laden?’

‘Didn’t I just tell you to fuck off?’ Mercedes didn’t want to lose her temper completely, but she’d found lately that the sex was much better when Simon got arrogant and she got angry.

So, yeah, it was a definite turn-on when Simon said, ‘And I bet you’ll still let me fuck you when you’re a married woman. You will, won’t you? I’m sure you’ve thought about it.’

Mercedes said nothing. Leaning her ass back against the retro sideboard she was using as a TV stand, she perceived the brush of her clothing against her flesh. God, she wished she was naked already. She wanted him to throw her down on that loveseat and just fuck the life out of her.

‘This is quite a secret to keep from your husband-to-be,’ Simon went on. His tone was irreproachably casual, like all these weighty matters were of no consequence to her. Like opening his mouth to the wrong person wouldn’t ruin her life. But, then, he was married too …

‘This is quite a secret to keep from your wife,’ Mercedes shot back. ‘What do you think she’d say if she knew you were paying me to fuck you? This pretty young thing having sex with her husband, and all for cash. How would she like that?’

Back when they were “dating” or whatever you’d call it – back before money was changing hands – Simon always got riled up when Mercedes mentioned his wife. Now he took everything in stride. Nothing seemed to matter any more.

Rising from the loveseat, Simon crossed the narrow expanse of her living room and took her arms in his tight grip, holding them firmly against her sides. ‘You know what I’m going to do to you today?’ His breath was hot on her ear, his voice still calm.
